Jussi Merikanto

Baritone Jussi Merikanto started his singing career as a chorister in the famous boys choir Cantores Minores, made his operatic debut in 1992 as one of the three boys in Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute at the Savonlinna opera festival. After studies at the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki he made his professional operatic debut at the Helsinki National Opera as Papageno (Magic Flute). His numerous roles have included Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), Leporello (Don Giovanni), Samuel (Un ballo in maschera), Marullo (Rigoletto), Shaunard (La Boheme), Karjanmaan Kyösti (Ostrobothnians), Morales (Carmen), Achilla (Julius Caersar) and Dandini (La Cenerentola).

Merikanto has made operatic guest appearances in Kuopio and Turku and at the Ilmajoki Festival, where he created the leading role in ”Elämälle”, an opera about composer Oscar Merikanto’s life. Other guest appearances have included the Naantali Festival, Les Heures Romantiques Festival in France, the Rossini Festival in Italy and the Musashino Festival  in Japan. Jussi Merikanto has since 2011 been artistic director of the Christmas song event in Nurmes, Finland.
