Gustav Djupsjöbacka

Pianist Gustav Djupsjöbacka studied at the Sibelius Academy under Maija Helasvuo and continued his studies in Prague with Jan Panenka and in Vienna with Hilde Langer-Rühl. He graduated in 1977 and made his professional debut in 1978. Art song interpretation he studied at master classes with  Pentti Koskimies, Erik Werba and Irwin Gage. He has a Doctorate in music about the art songs by Toivo Kuula from the Sibelius Academy. 1977-88 he was keybordist of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and from 1988 onwards he was lecturer of lied interpretation and 2004-2012 Principal at the Sibelius Academy.

Gustav Djupsjöbacka has collaborated with many of the top Finnish singers a.o Monica Groop, and made several recordings with Tom Krause, Ritva Auvinen, Helena Juntunen and Gabriel Suovanen. He has given numerous master classes in Europe, USA and Japan and often been on the jury in international competitions such as the Maj Lind piano competition 2007, Rimsky-Korsakov competition in St. Petersburg and Hummel-competition in Bratislava and the third Jean Sibelius-Singing competition in 2015. In 2000 WSOY published his book “Istumme ilokivelle” with 100 Finnish Art Songs. He has been artistic director at the festivals in Jorois and Joensuu and since 2014 he is Head of the board of Finland Festivals as well as a member of the board at the Paulo Foundation and since 2016 on the board of Culture and Society at the Academy of Finland.
